These are just two of the accolades received at the end of Global Unconventional Gas 2010—Unlocking Your Potential, which took place June 15-17, in Amsterdam. The conference focused on exchanging ideas on the enormous global potential of gas shale and other unconventional gas resources. Presentations covered the challenges to overcome to enable these resources to reach their full potential and the approaches, processes, and techniques that are key to unlocking these resources worldwide.
Best practices, lessons learned, and potential solutions were examined during presentations, panel discussions, and a special learning workshop on Thursday, June 17.
Who attended? Over 150 delegates representing 90 companies and 25 countries participated in this unique event, including government policymakers, investment advisors, press representatives, university researchers, and senior experts from major corporations and entrepreneurial startups. This diversity provided an energetic and engaging meeting.
Daily presentation highlights. Tuesday’s presentations featured policymakers and organization executives who shared visions for how unconventional natural gas will shape the future of countries and companies. Key lessons learned from North American shale plays were reviewed and delegates were able to question panel members from production and service companies. During the international panel discussion, company executives described their successes and areas for improvement in enabling unconventional gas development, fielding questions from the audience. Breaks, receptions, and lunches allowed the group to network with speakers and colleagues to share ideas on how the potential for unconventional natural gas will be unlocked in their own countries.
Wednesday’s agenda featured a Learning Workshop, with technical presentations on resource potential, shale geology and production considerations, shale gas's environmental footprint, and the road ahead. Presenters answered thoughtful questions by participants, stimulating additional discussions and providing a framework for implementation.
Award Ceremony. One highlight of the conference was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement award to George Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell is credited with pioneering hydraulic fracturing, allowing gas to be extracted from shale formations. During his career, he participated in approximately 10,000 wells, including more than 1,000 wildcats. He and his company found upwards of 200 oil and 350 gas deposits.
Although Mr. Mitchell could not attend the conference, his comments, as well as key milestones of his career, were presented on video. Mr. Mitchell's son, J. Todd Mitchell, Director, Devon Energy Corp., and President of Two Seven Ventures, LLC, was in attendance and accepted the award for his father. He also shared historical perspectives on shale gas.
According to Guy Lewis, Managing Director, Exploration & Production for GTI, and conference chairman, "The speakers were tremendous and provided very important perspectives on the global potential of unconventional gas and what it makes possible, the challenges ahead that will need to be addressed to enable this potential, and some of the key technologies important to reducing the cost and environmental footprint of development. [But] it will take collaboration between producers, service companies, universities, thought leaders, and governments to successfully unlock this potential. We look forward to continuing the conversations that started in Amsterdam."
We will be announcing the date and location of Global Unconventional Gas 2011 in the coming weeks. |
